The Fix-it Man

Stephen James Stubbs, who was named after me, Carl James Stubbs, and his brother who had passed away, Andrew James Stubbs, and in turn named his cat James. The name in our family comes from my grandfather on my mother’s side.
From a very early age, Stephen was able to take anything apart. As he got older, he also put them back together again. He seemed to be able to just look at something and determine what was wrong with it and then fix it. It was wonderful to have someone who could not only take things apart but put them back together while fixing the problem.

When we got computers for our home, Stephen was working at an online service that helped people with their computer problems. He was always working on a computer and getting it fixed and working. He was amazing. I would just say that it wouldn’t work. Stephen would look at it and say, this is why it won’t work and then fix it.

He has also worked as a mechanic and for some time kept our cars repaired and running. He is so much like his Grandfather Leonard Stubbs, it is amazing. I have a picture of both of them at the same age and you can’t tell the difference. His grandfather could also look at things and tell what was wrong and then fix it. Unfortunately, that ability seems to have skipped a generation. I can look at something and tell it isn’t working, but I can’t fix it.
Stephen has a small business making swords, spears, shields, and arrows from foam. They are used by people who are into battle games, and these creations make the games possible without causing death. He played the games first and then started making the items and selling them, first online, and then in a small storefront, and now with a stand at the grounds where the games take place, much like an old village.
One time when we were redoing our backyard and had rented a backhoe, we let him drive it and to do some of the work. He did great and would have kept going all day if it hadn’t been for his older siblings that wanted to operate it.
I think that he could repair almost anything. He has a son that is much like him. Orson can do many of the same things that Stephen did at his age.
I marvel at his ability to jump in and do things. I would like to be able to do them also, but I don’t have the vision to see how things work, at least not as good as Stephen and some of his siblings. My father has passed on to them the great genius that he had.
Stephen is always around and taking care of Joy and me. How blessed we are we to have him near us. He is greatly loved.
