A Child is Born While a Man Attempts to Emerge
I have been writing about some of the experiences that I
have had in my life. Some of my grandchildren have been reading them online,
and I think that they are enjoying them. We are blessed to have one of our sons
and his son, our grandson, living with us at the present. Yesterday our
grandson Orson asked if I would read one of the stories to him. I actually read
the last two stories I had written to him.

Orson then asked me
to write a story about him. So, I am going to attempt to write what I can
remember. I first met Orson in the hospital the day he was born. He was a
beautiful little boy, who looked strong and fit even at his first day of life.
For the first few years he lived with his mother, Amanda. She went by Mandi.
She would come over to our home at 1680 South 100 East and visit with us.
Orson often stayed with us and loved to play in our backyard
where we had a number of 4’X12’ boxes for growing vegetables. He would help me
to cultivate and water the plants in the boxes. We put in a drip line that ran
to each box and then to each plant. What he enjoyed most was the wagon that we
had. He would pull the wagon between the rows of grow boxes and seemed to have
a great time. He would load the wagon up with all kinds of toys and take them
on a trip around and through the garden boxes. Sometimes he got a little
carried away with what he put in the wagon, such as a trike, garden tools,
rakes, shovels, and many other items he could find in the house or in the shed.
He also enjoyed the swings we had in the backyard.
I got to spend some time with him when he wasn’t living with
us. I would go to his school, Cherry Hill. His teacher was Marsha Poai, and she
had parents coming to the school and reading with their children. I got to go
and read with Orson. I had a good time. Sometimes it was difficult, because
Orson was not able to stay focused on the reading. The arrangement that we came
up with was that he would read a page and then I would read a page. This seemed
to work out better. He was fun to watch. Every once in a while, he would look
up from the book to make sure I was watching and not being distracted.
Sometimes I would read words that were not there and he would always catch me.
I was pretty sure he was paying attention.
Not too long ago his father and step-mother went to the
temple to be sealed and Orson was sealed to them at that time. They are now
separated, intending to get a divorce, and it has left him a little confused,
but he is coping the best he can. It is hard to tell sometimes how he is really
doing.
He really needs and likes interaction with another person.
This was brought out when his cousins would come over, and they would have a
great time playing together. I remember how much I enjoyed being with my
cousins.
Orson is a brilliant young man. His mind bounces around from
topic to topic and knows what is going on. We now have the opportunity to have
him living in our home again and Joy is his teacher. It is a very difficult
time with the pandemic going on around the world. He now can’t play with the
neighborhood children because we are isolated in our home. His mind is still
active and smart. I would guess that he would make a great attorney, or maybe a
doctor. Only time will tell. So, for right now, he is a wonderful, challenging,
loving young man anxious for the pandemic to be over. The adults around him are
wishing for the pandemic to be over too.
